Is it bad to accept an offer, decline, and and so reapply afterward? [#permalink] 11 Apr 2020, 16:41
Hi There,
I've been accepted into a program that I would exist happy to become to, although I'm starting to realize I may desire more than fourth dimension before I head into that plan. I know this flies into the face of what the application process tells you to do, just I realize my state of affairs might be ameliorate suited to start in a twelvemonth let's say or even to reapply into a dual degree program such as a JD/MBA in a year. I'thou still on the fence and the state of affairs with COVID-xix hasn't helped provide clarity. I program to have some time in the next calendar month to decide, and unfortunately the program doesn't accept deferrals.
Would it be wrong/bad/hurt my chances to have the offer and pay the deposit initially, potentially renege on my offering for this yr, and then re-employ the next bike? I would communicate extensively with the AdCom team virtually my reasoning and reaffirm that it is the identify I desire to get, merely not necessarily at this time.
My gut tells me this would cause the AdCom committee some headache and I'm leaning away from it, but am wondering if you all have any advice or experience on this topic?
Cheers!

Hi ashoosha,
Congrats on your offering of admission! Ultimately, you want to feel confident in whatever decision yous're making -- the last affair you lot want is to be unsure of your choice for a conclusion as large as enrolling in graduate schoolhouse. Without knowing more details nigh your current hesitation, I would say that open and honest advice with the Adcom (equally you've pointed out) is far and away the most important slice of the puzzle hither. Mayhap they can connect you with a couple of current students who might accept shared some of your same questions / doubts prior to enrolling, or possibly they can give y'all data most the possibility of moving into a dual-caste track after you enroll (you never know what might or might not be possible until you inquire). I think yous'll exist best-served by trying to go answers to your doubts now, in the next month, one way or the other.
If you lot do put downwards a deposit and and then renege on your acceptance of the admissions offering, it'southward not the end of the world (they'll but offer your spot to someone on the wait listing), but it's truthful that it won't look corking if they encounter your name pop up in the awarding pool in the very next cycle. Whatever reapplicant must fill out an additional brusque answer explaining why they're reapplying and what has changed since the final time they applied. If yous don't have a compelling answer to that question, the Adcom is unlikely to wait favorably upon your reapplication then soon later y'all accustomed and then turned down their offering.
In short, my advice would be to stick with whatever decision you brand when eolith time comes. If you put down a deposit, yous should exist committing yourself to enrolling this fall. If yous don't think you want to enroll this autumn, then don't put down a deposit and permit someone else take your spot instead while y'all regroup and figure out the all-time next steps for you.
Good luck with your determination!
Doris
